With small downtown venues becoming the perfect first step to being known in Vancouver’s entertainment scene, dreams of making it big and hitting the headlines are easier than ever. Though it may come to no surprise that some aspiring artists may be a little greedy on the limelight in Vancity’s metropolis, these four young individuals know how to keep it cool, without losing their edginess and “artistic clout” (and yes…I just used the word “clout” in one of my articles).

With a unanimous decision that they all wanted to come together to make music, Charlie Kerr on vocals, Oliver (“Oli”) Mann on guitar and Sam Rutledge manning the drums, came together to form Vancouver based ‘multi genre’ band ‘The Beauties.’ Now I know what you’re thinking: A GIRLY BAND NAME WITH DUDES PLAYING IN IT?!…OMGWTFBBQ. Instead of having deep, intense, emotion evoking meaning in their name, the guys decided to be playful and produce a name that gives the impression that it is an all girl group (…PRETTY CLEVER!!). And now with their newest addition of bassist Simon Elterman, The Beauties continue to reinvent the alternative music scene with their trendy, edgy, electronic, disco funk, punk style (hence why they are labelled ‘multi genre’). With the group producing such a new and raw sound, their lyrics compliment this. Kerr, who is also the band’s main lyricist draws inspiration from pretty much anything that gets his creative juices running.

Though most of the band members are still completing their High school education, they are artistically and creatively beyond their years. And with their style and sounds always changing at a constant, there’s no telling what The Beauties will have up their sleeves next.
