Sofia Clothing at Eco-Fashion Week
If you’re anything like me, the idea of anything good for me is often followed by an un-attractive facial expression of pouting out my lips and scrunching up my nose in disgust. So, when the Modline.com got the chance to stop by the Salt Building at the Olympic Village on February 22, 2011 for what’s dubbed as Eco-Fashion Week hosted by Aveda, I was caught dead in my tracks with the same sort of expression due to the arrogant assumption that I would be watching some line promote pieces I could never really see myself in. Right? Wrong! That ‘some’ line I was so presumptuous about just happened to be Sofia Clothing by Sophia Mendez-Scheone. Which also happened to leave me biting my tongue in aw -if that’s even at all possible! The young designer showed off her budding potential with solid, polished pieces of her Fall/Winter 2011 collection on the EFW runway that night. Her models -all decked with the same long, smooth and straightened hair style- took their steps to the captivating, hard-hitting beats of electro music. Ingeniously comparable to (what I assume) her concept portrays: structured designs boldly amplified to a trending beat.
Sofia carries a talent to one-up the simplicity of a garment by adding large funneled collars or exaggerated button enclosures to her coats, a ruching effect to the sleeves of a simple black jacket and loose fit dresses with cross body designs all the while keeping a clean polished, ‘streets of Manhattan’ look.
But don’t be quick to judge based on her choice of colors. Even with limiting her fabrics to solid blacks, hues of gray, shades of red and undertones of olive greens and lavender purples, Sofia’s pieces certainly offer more effortless ideas to mix and match – giving the consumer and their wallet a nice piece of mind.Pushing fashion forward with the use of organic fabrics, designers like Sophia Mendez-Scheone of Sofia Clothing gave fashionistas an impeccable show at the Eco-Fashion Week. And if I may, gave one oblivious, lip pouting, nose crunching, fashion writer (let’s not name any names…) a run for their lack of enthusiasm.www.sofiaclothing.comPhotos courtesy of Sophia Mendez-ScheoneTaken by Eugene Flores - www.highendphotography.ca
