GIRL VS GIRL ACTION…ON WHEELS!

That’s right boys and girls, your eyes fool you not. Us Modliners here have decided to take on a new direction with our media coverage. Something even more underground, more controversial, more…HARDCORE. Ok, get your heads out of the gutter (pervs). Sorry to sound like a total tease, but that ‘freaky deaky’ stuff is not the main focus of this story. But it sure got your attention.
Last Saturday, the folks up at Kerrisdale Arena were shaken, hard hit and rumbled by a few bad-ass bitches competing in Vancouver’s own Terminal City Roller Girls, roller-skate derby. For those unfamiliar with the sport, it’s very much similar to what you would see in Drew Barrymore’s underground, cult n00b film Whip It!. For those unfamiliar with such a movie (like seriously where have you been?), it is the new age Roller Jam. Still scratching your head? In sum, TCRG is a magical amalgamation of rugby, 70s discotheque, Friday night club catfights and glitter, jam packed in an equally boisterous ‘standing room only’ arena.Serving as a proverbial “suck it!” to all things frou-frou, these roller girls are definitely not faint of heart. The main objective of the game is to have the delegated “jammer” in each team lead the rest of the pack. Though it’s easy enough to comprehend, these rivaling jammers have to fight amongst the neck-breaking, pile-driving, Stone Cold “Stunner”-ing “blockers” who prevent them from maintaining the lead. Scoring points here is simple: only the jam leader scores, and she does this by passing rival players round the rink.
The first game of the night headlined Vancouver’s own Faster Pussycats and Atomic City, a Tri-county TCRG team hailing from Uncle Sam’s own Washington State. Faster Pussycat’s “Amy Wheeler” and “Amazombie” created mad havoc in the rink, earning the FPC’s 137 to 49 point victory. The second game of the night featured two of Vancouver’s own “Bad Reputations” and the “Riot Girls.” While majority of the period spelled a tight game between the two, the “Bad Reps” ultimately came out victorious, achieving the fastest point gap of the night, finishing the “Riot Girls” off with a 132 to 65.
Though these ladies appear to have mad beef with each other (I’m talking about “OMG no you di’int just hit on mah man” kind of beef), all is well at the end as they give kudos to their rivals for a well played game. With TCRG slowly emerging from the underground, it will only be a matter of time until the rough and tumble world of roller derby comes to fruition. Ladies, forget everything that The Spice Girls have taught you: TCRG is the new definition of Girl Power.
